Chris Birchall was a powerful winger who has progressed through the Port Vale FC youth ranks. He broke through to a regular starting spot in 2004 and was rewarded with the young player of the year award and a call-up to the Trinidad and Tobago squad.
He became the first Vale player ever to play in the World Cup Finals and set the record for the club’s all-time International appearances. His World Cup performances brought him to the attention of Coventry City who signed Birchall for a fee of £350,000 in 2006. The winger later had a spell in the US Leagues.
He returned to the Valiants in 2013, helping the club to promotion at the end of the 2012-13 season and signed a new one-year contract in the summer of 2015. He left the club in 2016 after over 150 senior appearances for the Valiants but has returned to the stadium with the local media on occasions.
