One minute guide to: Southport
Here’s another of our brief, pre-season previews looking at Vale’s Saturday opponents, Martin Foyle’s Southport.
Team news
Vale will once again ring the changes as Micky Adams tests out various formations. However, Byron Moore could (understandably) miss out once again on compassionate grounds.
Connections
There are several former Valiants in the Southport ranks. Vale legends Martin Foyle and Andy Porter form the managerial team while former youth teamer Daniel Lloyd-Weston should line up in goal.
Trivia
In 1918, the club were renamed Southport Vulcan after the local Vulcan Motor company – it was the first ever example of a club taking a sponsor’s name. They reverted back to Southport in 1921.
Previous meetings
The two sides have met 23 times in competitive matches with the majority in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Vale have won eleven, compared to Southport’s three and there have been nine draws.
Last meeting
The two sides last met in an FA Cup clash in November 1988. Vale triumphed 2-0 thanks to goals from Riley and Sproson.
