We look through the programme for Port Vale’s centenary match against Stoke City.
I remember going to this match (standing in the Railway Paddock) which resulted in a 1-1 draw. It was one of Garth Crooks’s first ever games for Stoke. I can’t recall who scored Vale’s goal, but it was a late equalizer to a Jimmy Greenhoff long range volley. Considering it was only a friendly game it was a well attended. I recall the attendance was 9,800. As an act of goodwill Stoke didn’t accept any of the gate receipts for their appearance expenses, so the Vale boosted their coffers with a decent financial return. I don’t recall any trouble whatsoever between the two sets of supporters.
