We discovered this entertaining spat between fan and club in the letters section of the Evening Sentinel newspaper between September and October 1895.
Background
This was Port Vale’s fourth season in the Football League. They finished 14th out of sixteenth and along with the two teams below them dropped out of the Football League (they rejoined in 1898. The main issue looked to be goalscoring with Ernest Beckett the top-scorer with just eight goals.
Here are the letters in chronological order. They are written by an anonymous fan, using the pseudonym “Disgusted” and Port Vale club secretary Mr McGregor.

Love it! I wonder if Disgusted ever went back for half a match, or even a full one? And a paragraph deleted from one reply because it was irrelevant and based on false premises. I wonder….
