James Plant player profile
Forward James Plant graduated through the Valiants youth team to make his senior debut in the 2022-23 season.
Plant and fellow youth teamer Tommy McDermott were invited to train with the first-team squad at the end of the 2021-22 season and both played a full part in Vale’s 2022 pre-season campaign.
Plant made his senior debut for Port Vale in a 1–0 victory over Stockport County in an EFL Trophy group stage game at Vale Park on 30 August 2022. He was subsequently loaned out to Nantwich Town to gain further first-team experience.
Plant burst into the first-team squad during the latter stages of the 2022-23 season. He was handed a full debut in an unfamiliar midfield role against Ipswich and impressed enough to keep his place. He then hit his first goal in a 3-2 loss at Charlton and scored on his full home debut a week later. He duly signed a professional contract with the club which was then extended until 2027.
The forward was then sent on loan to Yeovil during the 2023-24 season but despite impressive form for his temporary club, it was ended early due to injury. However, after recovering, Plant rejoined Yeovil for the rest of the campaign. Unfortunately, injury again cut his loan spell short as he was ruled out for the rest of the season.
In August 2025, Plant returned to Yeovil on loan again – in a deal lasting until January 2026. After finding his Vale appearances limited, Plant moved to Tranmere Rovers later that month.
