It’s been well over a century since Port Vale’s last win over Arsenal and here’s a match report on that game.
In fact, the Valiants have only recorded four wins over the Gunners – all occurring in the period 1894 to 1901.
About the 1901-1902 season
The 1901-1902 was Port Vale’s fourth consecutive season in the Football League. Attendances varied considerably – ranging from 100 against Blackpool to 8,000 against Leicester Fosse. However, despite no player sales the club recorded a rare profit. Vale, managed by Sam Gleaves (pictured) finished in twelfth place and their top scorer was Adrian Capes with 18 goals. Opponents Arsenal (then known as Woolwich Arsenal) finished in fourth place. They also gained revenge in the return fixture winning 3-1. Vale have failed to beat Arsenal in the nine fixtures that have followed this game.
About the game
Played in front of 3,000 people at the Cobridge Stadium in late September, striker Dan Simpson was the matchwinner for the Valiants in a 1-0 victory. It was the Vale’s second home win of the season.
The report
It comes from the Morning Leader newspaper – our thanks to Kev Walshaw for the clipping.

I would Like to see a match,
played by one team with the line-up of the 1950’s e.g.
Goalkeeper / Two Full Backs / Three Half Backs / Five Forwards – shirts numbered 1 to 11
Against A modern Team Line Up e.g.
Goalkeeper / Two Wing Backs / ? Mid Fielders / one forward – shirts Squad Numbers
I would Back the !950’s Line-Up !
