The Valiants are still without a League win this season after a late double from Stevenage’s Jamie Reid earned the visitors a win on Tuesday night.
Team news
With George Byers suspended, Darren Moore opted to bring Jordan Shipley into his starting eleven. Skipper Ben Garrity also returned from injury to make the bench along with Jaheim Headley who had served his suspension. Fellow wingback Jordan Gabriel was also a substitute but there was no place in the squad for either Rhys Walters or Jayden Stockley.
First-half
Striker Lorent Tolaj netted his first of the season as the Valiants ended the half a goal to the good at Vale Park.
After the visitors kicked off, it was Vale with the early pressure as they made a positive start. The best chance saw Lorent Tolaj found in the box after four minutes, but he fired wide. More good work saw Tolaj set free but he was pulled back for an apparent foul in the box.
The visitors came more into the game and came the closest to taking the lead on 16 minutes when Reid turned well and fired the ball against the post with Marosi beaten. There was also a chance for Houghton which he drove over and a good challenge by Humphreys stopped another move.
Vale pushed again and a dangerous cross from Shipley just evaded Tolaj’s head on 27 minutes. A Shipley free-kick then caused problems minutes later. From the resulting corner, Vale came inches from scoring with Curtis’ back header just wide.
On 31 minutes, Tolaj found Gordon in the box but he couldn’t get his shot away. With Vale pushing and creating chance, Croasdale was next to miss as he headed wide.
However, Vale did find the net on 32 minutes. Tolaj was found in the box and he kept his cool to round the keeper and net from a narrow angle.
Vale nearly made it 2-0 minutes later but Mitch Clark could not apply the finishing touch.
It had been an entertaining half with the Valiants stringing some nice football together and finishing a goal ahead at the break.
Half-time: Port Vale 1-0 Stevenage
Second-half
Ben Garrity returned to action but the Valiants were to rue missed chances as Stevenage netted twice in the last two minutes of normal time to turn the game around.
Vale had the first change of the half as Tolaj, now looking full of confidence, was found. He wriggled free but his shot was saved.
There was an early warning of what was to come when Reid’s effort nearly evaded Marosi on 59 minutes following poor Vale defending.
The home side continued to have chances without taking advantage. Shipley blazed over shortly before limping off and Ryan Croasdale saw another curling effort saved.
Funso Ojo was the next midfielder to pick up a knock with Vale using five subs on the night including a return for skipper Ben Garrity.
However, it was no fairytale return. Vale had failed to capitalise on their chances and were to regret it on 88 minutes when Reid was inexplicably left unmarked in the box and he fired powerfully home to level the scores. It would get even worse two minutes later. Reid produced a superb finish to win the game.
A shellshocked Vale tried to counter with the best chance falling to Faal who headed straight at the keeper – but to no avail.
As the final whistle went, it was Stevenage celebrating their 100% record and Vale wondering how they’d managed to snatchdefeat from the jaws of victory.
Full-time: Port Vale 1-2 Stevenage
Analysis
The match
Played on a lovely Burslem evening, this was shaping to be a great night for Vale fans until that late twist. The Valiants will rue missed chances and there will surely be an inquest over who should have been marking Reid for the first goal. The second goal, was a class finish.
The tactics
Darren Moore started with a 3-5-2 formation with Shipley the only change from the team that started at Burton Albion. However, Moore may have regreted not having a second central midfielder on the bench when Shipley and Ojo went off. Perhaps the legs of Rhys Walters could have helped Vale in the final minutes.
The players
Funso Ojo once again impressed – it is like having a new signing while Mitch Clark was again dangerous on the right. It was also nice to see Lorent Tolaj produce a composed finish which will do his confidence good. Mitch Clark was also his usual industrious self.
Star man
Funso Ojo.
Summing up
Will Moore Reid them the riot act?

Team news
The circumstances of this disappointing defeat are a hammer blow, but also a reminder of the step up to a higher league where N.Ireland international striker Reid punished the Vale’s defence with quality finishing. It’s still very early days, and providing the Vale learn from this defeat there’s still 42 league games remaining of this campaign to consolidate a safe finishing position. Every supporter will have their opinion on team selection, but in the absence of an explanation it’s difficult to fathom how Walters and Stockley (if match fit) could have been excluded from the match day squad.
How did we lose!!! Naive defending at the end and wasteful finishing. We should have been 2 or maybe 3 up before they scored. For 80 minutes fantastic but matches last for 95 plus nowadays. Injuries to our better performers didn’t help. This season was always going to be tough but at the moment we are shooting ourselves in the foot. Left feeling absolutely gutted at the end. Let’s be realistic if this carries on we are in a real survival fight to stay in league 1 already after 4 games A long way to go, so let’s keep faith and let’s hope we can get some momentum. I’m sure we will play worse and get results if we play in a similar vain. To use Mr Moores favourite saying I to was “dissapointed “
No Walters Stockley, Plant, even on the bench. OK with injuries we went to a compact 3 5 2 a ragged 5 3 2. The manager is not using the squad in a good manner and the players are lacking direction. Tough game to Come on Saturday and3 points vital.6 more games and review the managers position before we in a relegation fight.
