Port Vale have taken released former Everton goalkeeper Billy Crellin on trial.
Crellin was released by the Premier League side at the end of last season. The 24 year-old took part in the club’s open training session on Monday and also played in Vale’s 1-1 draw against Altrincham on Tuesday evening.
The Valiants look to be in the market for another goalkeeper. Last season’s number one, Ben Amos, is injured and out for an unspecified length of time. It leaves summer signing Marko Marosi as this season’s number one.
However, youngster Arron Davies remains the only other goalkeeper on Vale’s books and the club may feel it is too soon for him to be in the first-team squad. A loan move to gain experience is more likely for the teenager.
So, Crellin may fit the bill as relatively experienced cover and competition for Marosi. The six footer played 38 times in League Two on loan at Accrington last season, so he has a decent amount of League experience. Overall, Crellin has 86 senior appearances after spells at Fleetwood, Bolton Wanderers (loan), Chorley (loan), FC United (loan) and Accrington (loan).
Our thanks to Roy Thompson for the Crellin image.
