The bungled Rhys Williams transfer marked one of the low points of the much criticised David Flitcroft regime.

In an alternative world, Port Vale may have pulled off a masterstroke on 16th January as they replaced underperforming Kofi Balmer with cultured Liverpool defender Rhys Williams. In reality, it was an embarrassing disaster. Just fifteen days after signing, Vale announced that “following the emergence of an underlying injury issue” the defender had returned to his parent club. Williams had failed to even make a matchday squad.
The Valiants should really have seen the warning signs with the Liverpool man. Williams had spent the first-half of the season on loan at Aberdeen but had failed to make an appearance. Manager Barry Robson had been clear about the issues saying the player had “niggle after niggle” and “stop-start.”
Furthermore, two previous spells by Williams – stints at Swansea in 2021/22 and Blackpool in 2022/23 had both been cut short – so the warning signs were certainly there.
The Liverpool youngster was just one of a clutch of failed loan signings made in January 2024 by director of football David Flitcroft. While the others didn’t work for a variety of reasons – Dan Gore was injured, Jenson Weir unimpressive, Alex Mighten and (Williams replacement) Kaspar Lopata underused – at least they made it onto the pitch.
