Former Valiants: Darrell Clarke set to be named Barnsley manager
Media reports suggest that Cheltenham Town manager Darrell Clarke will be appointed the new manager of Barnsley.
Cheltenham will receive a six-figure compensation fee according to reports. Barnsley have been under the caretaker management of ex-Robins forward Martin Devaney since parting company with Neill Collins on April 22.
Clarke did a brilliant job at Cheltenham last season. The club looked doomed before he took over but he took the Robins’ battle against relegation to the final day of last season, when a 2-1 defeat at Stevenage saw them drop to League Two after a three-year stay in League One.
He also managed Port Vale to promotion to League One during his first full season in charge of the club. The manager also suffered a traumatic personal tragedy when his daughter passed away in 2022. Clarke was dismissed by the Valiants in April 2023 despite a 41% win ratio from his 124 games in charge.
He released a statement two weeks later which stated: “Port Vale and its incredible fanbase will always hold a place in my and my family’s hearts. The journey we travelled together, on and off the pitch, can never be erased. I will never be able to repay you as people for how you were there for us in our darkest hour, and for that we will be eternally grateful”

One of the three major mistakes made by the club last season was sacking Darell. The other two was shouldn’t have sacked Colin Garlick and didn’t sack Flitcroft earlier

The Shanahans motto is “the grass is always greener on the other side “……Darrell is removed after tacking over from a sacking and is then sacked and Crosby takes over and is then sacked and the “wonderful .so lucky to get him ,fancy him coming to little Port Vale” ,fails to motivate 15 players to start earning their wages with an erm ,erm, erm,….DC had the best win average of them all …and the stupid , infatuated.,lacking in ability and nouse St Carol of Burslem under the influence of her Bbf Flitcroft couldn’t see past her nose
She needs to go ,and soon , because until her influence and poor judgement is removed,we will never rise from the bottom feeders of the EFL

A well earned and deserved step up for Clarke to manage high potential Barnsley with 13,000 home gates. Pleased for him, if and when confirmed.

What people seem to forget that the Vale were on an horrendous run of bad results hence the sack.

Great appointment for both Barnsley and Clarke. Hopefully Barnsley give him sufficient funds for him to build what I expect will be a promotion winning squad.
