“Big learning curve” – “humble” Jesse Debrah on “eventful” start to Port Vale career
Defender Jesse Debrah says his red card against Bristol Rovers was a “big learning curve” but he intends to stay “humble, remain level” after he reflected on an “eventful” start to his Port Vale career.
Debrah scored his first goal in the Football League Trophy clash against Newcastle Utd U21 – in marked contrast to the previous game where he saw red against Bristol Rovers.
The red card was a big learning curve. I walked down the tunnel. It wasn’t a great feeling. That’s part of football, you have ups, you have downs…
Reflecting on his goal the defender said: “I was so happy to score… Right place, right time.”
However, it is arguably his red card against Bristol Rovers which has had the biggest impact so far. The defender feels he needs to adapt from the non-league game to League One level and will learn from his dismissal. He commented: “The red card was a big learning curve. I walked down the tunnel. It wasn’t a great feeling. That’s part of football, you have ups, you have downs. I thought it was harsh. The manager thought it was harsh but the rules are a bit different (from non-league). That’s something I need to get used to. It’s all about learning and getting better.”
Debrah also praised manager Andy Crosby for backing him after the red card and for managing his fitness. He added: “I’m really grateful for that (Crosby’s backing). I can only repay him by my performances because he installs his trust in me. I like to learn. I like to progress. It’s a good environment here and I’m glad to be here.
“The manager has been big on managing my fitness, managing my minutes and I’m really grateful for that as I know a lot of managers would just rush you in. I hope I can get more minutes in the future.”
