Mike Baggaley, the popular and long-standing Sentinel Port Vale reporter has ended over twenty years reporting on the club, the newspaper reports.
Baggaley, who first started reporting on the Vale in 2000 is moving to the Birmingham Mail to report on Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“Baggers” has been a popular, approachable and knowledgeable member of the Vale press corps for many years and notably maintained a dignified approach despite being banned at one point by controversial former Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite.
According to a piece by Baggaley in the Sentinel his spell has included “two promotions, two relegations and two spells in administration.”
He notes the frosty relationship with Smurthwaite adding: “He seemed to regard the Sentinel as a necessary evil, except for the spells when he changed his mind about the necessary bit and banned us after getting the hump with the coverage.”
Baggaley ends his article by commenting that: “It wouldn’t be fair to the sub editor who has to fit this on the page to list everyone who has helped me over the last 24 years. Thanks to them and the Sentinel readers who have put up with my ramblings over the years. I just hope you all know I’ll always be grateful.”
