“We got back to basics” – Port Vale defender explains how side addressed slump
Port Vale defender Mal Benning said that the players “got back to basics” to address a worrying slump in the team’s performances.
A better display against Oxford on Saturday went some way towards ending the side’s poor form although the Valiants couldn’t force a win.
We knew the performances weren’t good enough against Accrington and against Cambridge. So, we got back to basics…
Benning says the poor displays against Accrington and Cambridge Utd were “not good enough” and the players sought to address it in training.
He told the media: “We gave it a good go (against Oxford) in the second-half. We knew the performances weren’t good enough against Accrington and against Cambridge.
“So, we got back to basics, I thought we did that very well as a team and had a bit of quality when we created our chances. We just needed one to go in for us. But it’s a good point.
“We knew we were well off it in the last two games as a squad. So, it is about securing the points now, getting as many as can until the end of the season.”
