Port Vale remain in the hunt for consecutive promotions

Arguably one of the most difficult objectives to achieve in football, and certainly in the English game, consecutive promotions are few and far between for good reason. Adapting to different levels of the Football League can be highly challenging, not least because of the obvious financial hurdles, but also in terms of rising to another level technically on the pitch.

Nevertheless, fans of Port Vale are currently dreaming about this possibility, following the success enjoyed at the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign, rising upwards from League Two and reaching League One. The 2022-23 season has been filled with complexities, results have been mixed, yet realistic options of another play-off push remain open for the team. 

Much more than just positive sensations

There’s an unmistakable sense of optimism around Vale Park these days, which could see average attendances rise beyond the 8,000 threshold, as the team continues to battle towards the possibility of another promotion push. The perception of success is always appealing to fans, encouraging them back to this historic ground, now accompanied by an enthusiastic younger generation of supporters.

Such voluminous crowds haven’t been enjoyed by the club for more than two decades, back when legendary manager John Rudge was at the helm, when his teams occasionally flirted with promotion to the highest level of English football. Those were certainly cherished years for older Vale fans, bringing fond memories of numerous iconic players, who firmly secured their status in the club’s folklore.

But after slumbering in the fourth tier for the last five seasons, and even sliding perilously close to dropping out of the EFL entirely, there is now the growing feeling that Port Vale are once again on the rise. Following the dramatic promotion from League Two last season, earned with an excellent 3-0 win over Mansfield Town in the Play-off Final at Wembley Stadium, there is an evident drive to repeat that most recent success.

While some would settle for the comfort of mid-table as the platform on which to build, viewing consolidation in League One as the best pathway to longer term success, others are far more ambitious regarding their aspirations for the team. So long as Port Vale remain within touching distance of the play-off places, the pursuit of consecutive promotions will remain squarely on the table.

Prospects of achieving yet another ascent

Although the club’s owners have never set any timescale on returning to the second tier, since taking over in May of 2019, Carol and Kevin Shanahan have been busy laying the foundations for that objective. Last summer Port Vale began investing £1.2 million toward significant improvements at Vale Park, ensuring the historic ground is ‘Championship ready’ should another promotion come quickly, including a new training pitch for the PVFC first team.

Such foresight is evidence of their ambitions, given that reaching the Championship has always been part of the long-term plan, although everything will ultimately depend upon results on the pitch. Thus far during the 2022-23 campaign in League One, there is enough to suggest Port Vale will be there or thereabouts, providing the cause can be aided by some additions in the January transfer window.

Looking at the latest odds for promotion at leading bookmakers, while some are sceptical about the prospects of Port Vale ascending yet again, others have steadily shortened their prices.
