Post-match reaction to Port Vale’s 3-2 FA Cup loss to Exeter City from manager Darrell Clarke, goalscorer Dennis Politic and Exeter manager Gary Caldwell.
Darrell Clarke
Second-half was nowhere near good enough. They got the goal before half-time, which was two yards out of play but we didn’t get that (decision) and then we didn’t reset and get ourselves going.
We were flat in the second-half which is not acceptable and we only have ourselves to blame that we are out of the Cup.
I am frustrated because I love the FA Cup; the second half was nowhere near the standards we set.
We got sloppy in possession, they were over-running us at times and it took the changes to get the impetus back into the game. It was too late in the half for me.
Four of the last five goals we have conceded that have come from outside the box, so the keepers need to do better with shots from outside of the box, that is what they are paid to do.
That was frustrating and then their keeper pulls off a great save through bodies on a day that we didn’t produce that bit of quality.
We had great chances within the game still, first-half we should have been more ruthless; we had a one-on-one, we hit the crossbar, Dennis then scored, Gavin Massey and Rory Holden at the end, we had good chances in an open game – too open at times.
Dennis Politic
It was (frustrating) to not qualify for the next round; we are very disappointed and I felt first-half we were all over them and dominated the game.
We had enough chances to put the game to bed and we have to learn from that and move on.
I think the goal just before half-time that they scored was important and second half we didn’t get going, it was a scruffy game and obviously they had good players that made a difference in the end.”
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell
Any cup tie always adds something different as they go for it and to try and win the game, but I thought we were excellent. We didn’t start very well, but we recovered from that, the goal settled us down, and then going forward, we were very good. I was disappointed with the goals we have lost, but delighted to be in the next round of the cup and to get the win.
We were a bit flat to start with and not getting second balls and possession, but the first goal was a great ball down the sides, and Stanno lays it on for Jevani. We had more control in the second-half, looked comfortable at 2-1, but by the end we were slogging it out, and thankfully we came out on top.
