Port Vale one hit wonders: number thirteen, Alex Gibson
In this series we look back at players who only made a solitary appearance for the Valiants. On the 10th October 2001, defender Alex Gibson made his only League appearance for the Valiants.
Alex Gibson in numbers…
The trialist who made a solitary appearance…
Alex Gibson was one of five free transfers who was brought in by Port Vale manager Brian Horton in the summer of 2001. Sadly, compared to his fellow signings (Ashley Dodd, Phil Hardy, Rae Ingram and Steve McPhee) Gibson was the one who had the briefest Vale career.
A former Stoke City youth team player, Gibson had to wait for his debut. It arrived on the 10th October when he played in a 1-1 draw at Chesterfield. He played 86 minutes of that game but sadly that was to prove the first and only League appearance of his football career. However, Gibson did at least have the consolation of one more appearance for the club. That came in a 2-1 Football League Trophy win over Carlisle United where he played the first 45 minutes.
Released at the end of the season, he moved on to spells with Stafford Rangers, Hednesford Town and Droyslden.
