How Port Vale FC paid tribute the last time a monarch passed away
Following the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we take a look at how Port Vale paid tribute to her father, George VI back in 1952.
On the 6th February 1952, King George VI passed away at the age of 56 and Queen Elizabeth II became the monarch.
Vale’s next game following George’s death was the home game against Gillingham on the 9th February. Port Vale won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Dickie Cunliffe. 12,768 fans were in attendance.
To mark the sad news, the players wore black armbands while there was a minute’s silence before the match. Players and officials also sang Abide With Me and the national anthem while the matchday programme featured a tribute (below).
On a sidenote, this win heralded started the run of a club record thirteen consecutive home victories.
