Not the brightest thing to say – Andy Crosby suggests Vale used Swindon captain’s comments as motivation
Port Vale assistant manager Andy Crosby said that Swindon captain Dion Conway’s pre-match comments were “not the brightest thing to say” and suggested the Valiants used them as motivation as they turned their play-off semi-final around on Thursday night.
Swindon won the first-leg 2-1 and Conway’s pre-match comments were widely slammed as condescending and arrogant by many Vale fans. The Swindon captain told the local media that:
We play better football than them, we’re better footballers, so we’ve just got to take care of the physical side of the game and we’ll be alright.
We don’t need to give anyone elbows, we just need to compete with them. We’re a fit side, we’re a strong side, we are very good with the ball. We don’t choose to lump the ball in the air…
It seems that the Vale team used those comments as motivation. Speaking after the game, Crosby told the media:
I’m not sure about the comments from their captain before the game slagging us off a little bit and saying we are a long ball team et cetera and all their players are better than ours. Maybe not the brightest thing to say before the second leg of a game. I’m delighted for all our players.
