Manager Darrell Clarke made two changes giving starts to James Gibbons and James Wilson. There was a delayed start to the game after a Harrogate player needed treatment for a head injury but after that the Valiants took control.
Jamie Proctor had two early chances as he narrowly missed heading home and then fired over on the turn after good work from Wilson.
Lewis Cass had a shot blocked as Vale pressed before they took the lead through a belter from David Worrall on 26 minutes. The winger almost made it two as he turned in the box but the keeper made a good save.
Nathan Smith headed wide from a Worrall corner as Vale continued to dominate before the opponents were reduced to ten men. Diamond, who could have seen red earlier after two earlier fouls, was dismissed for a second yellow after a late challenge on Covolan.
Half-time: Port Vale 1-0 Harrogate Town
The Valiants made a dream start to the second period when James Wilson got off the mark with an excellent effort from the edge of the box.
The opposition did try to get back into the game and Jones had to clear off the line from one early second-half melee. Then Hall fired over from close range as Vale’s attention levels dipped.
However, the Valiants rallied and comfortably saw out the remainder of the game. They could have added another when Benning’s cross was sliced towards goal by a defender but the Town keeper made a great save. In the dying moments, the goalkeeper made another good save to deny Proctor.
Worrall, the sponsors’ man of the match, went off to a standing ovation as Vale closed the game out to record a clean sheet and a welcome first three points at Vale Park this season.
