Seven of manager Darrell Clarke’s summer signings started against Sheffield Wednesday. Vale started strongly against their League One opponents but conceded on 23 minutes when defender Dominic Iorfa headed home.
However, it took just seven minute for the Valiants to draw level when David Worrall set up captain Tom Conlon to net from close range. It remained level at the break but Vale were grateful for saves from Lucas Covolan who did well to twice keep out efforts from Shodipo.
There were second-half chances for Pett and Johnson before Darrell Clarke brought on two more summer signings in loanee Lewis Cass and Mal Benning. As the match reached its final quarter striker James Wilson went close and Vale were made to pay for their missed chances as Dele-Bashiru put the visitors ahead on 79 minutes. Wednesday could have stretched their lead moments later but Covolan saved well.
It finished 2-1 for Wednesday after ninety minutes but it was a useful run out for the Valiants against higher league opposition and most importantly a welcome return to the stadium for Port Vale supporters.
