In baking hot conditions, there was a first start in goal for Port Vale’s Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Covolan while recent loan signing Lewis Cass was named on the bench alongside two trialists.
It was an open start but the visitors took the lead on fifteen minutes when Mighten cut inside and his shot beat Covolan and found the net. Vale countered with a stinging shot from Devante Rodney which was well saved.
However, Forest doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark when Colback took advantage of slack Vale defending. Vale were next to challenge when excellent work from Garrity set up Wilson whose thundering volley was tipped over.
At the interval, Vale made two changes with Stone coming on for Covolan and Proctor for Wilson. There was an early chance for Forest with Stone reacting well. However, the hot weather saw precious few chances in the second period as the visitors dominated possession and restricted Vale to a couple of long-range efforts. However, it was at least another good workout for the Vale as their new-look squad looks to get ready for the new season
