Who are yer: meet OVF forum user Wrex
In a revival of an old OVF column, we speak with OVF user Wrex whose favourite current Port Vale player is pictured above…
About you
Who are yer?
Wrex; Craig; 30; Werrington (his avatar is on the right)
Any interests away from Port Vale?
I like music, podcasts, videogames, editing Wikipedia, politics, role playing games (like Dungeons and Dragons), Magic the Gathering.
Tell us something about you others may not know?
If you ever read anything on Wikipedia about Port Vale then I probably wrote it (ha! ha!)
Your connection with OVF
How long have you been on OVF?
For three years, though I had been reading the forums long before then.
How and why did you pick your username?
From the Mass Effect videogame series. Wrex was a really good character in a really excellent game.
Who are your favourite OVF posters and why?
Jacko51 is always level headed. For Us All and Santa are good to read. Doha certainly speaks his mind and can say some really interesting stuff.
Port Vale over the years
When did you start supporting Port Vale and why?
Most kids in primary school chose big Premier League teams, some chose Stoke, I chose Vale! I think it’s in the blood as I have distant family members I’ve never met who supported the club, whereas my dad just followed both the local clubs.
Who is your favourite all-time Valiants player and why?
Weirdly enough Tyler (in the previous Who Are Yer feature) also listed Danny Sonner (right), who was also going to be my choice! So I’ll go for someone that no one else will ever pick: Frank McGinnes. I was reading Jeff Kent’s books on the club and this fella scored 109 goals for the club but tragically died at the age of 22 in the pre-season of the club’s first ever Football League campaign. Who knows what he could have achieved had he not died so young?
What was your all-time favourite Vale game and why?
5 April 2013, Port Vale 7 – 1 Burton Albion. I never thought I’d see us win a league match so comprehensively. It was almost surreal. I took a friend for his first Vale game and he never went again so I guess we couldn’t have done any more to win a second attendance from him!
Port Vale this season
Where would you normally sit in the stadium?
I prefer the Railway Stand as it gives you an excellent view of all the action and there’s always plenty of room. There’s always the odd loudmouth moaner wherever you go but I feel the Railway crowd are generally quite rational!
Your current favourite player and why?
A difficult one. I have a feeling Harry McKirdy might be one to watch this season, but I’ll say my current favourite is Cristian Montaño (pictured). An exciting player on his day and a character who has had some real struggles in his life so he is one who you want to see do well.
Where will Vale finish this season?
I think if everything goes well we can reach second. Certainly questions need to be asked if we miss out on the play-offs anyway.
