Photo Essay: Steve McPhee on the attack at Brentford’s Griffin Park, 2002
In this series we take a look at particularly memorable images from our OVF photo archives – this is a vintage snap of striker Steve McPhee against Brentford.
Background
This game was played in October 2002 and ended in a creitable 1-1 draw for the Valiants. Fellow striker Billy Paynter netted Vale’s goal on 68 minutes cancelling out an earlier Stephen Hunt penalty. That particular season was a frustrating one for McPhee as he netted just three League goals during the season. However, the Scottish striker transformed his form the following season as he netted 27 times to be the club’s top scorer.
The Griffin Park ground is set to be vacated by Brentford for a new stadium so this will be one of the last times the Vale visited the historic old ground. On the right of McPhee is strike partner Brett Angell. The veteran would make just two more appearances for the Valiants before departing for Brentford’s local rivals QPR.
The Vale side for that match was: Goodlad, Collins, Brightwell, Carragher, Charnock, Cummins, Durnin, Ashcroft, McPhee, Angell, Paynter
