About the match
This was an FA Cup fourth round tie from the 1959-60 season. Third Division Vale have beaten Dorchester Town, QPR and Cardiff City to be drawn against then Second Division Scunthorpe United in the fourth round. The attendance was 14,043 and it ended in a 1-0 away win to the Valiants thanks to a winner from Cliff Portwood (pictured right) . According to press reports it was a rearguard action by the Valiants as “the defence took the honours.” Vale were drawn at home against Aston Vila in the fifth round and lost 2-1 in front of a record crowd of 49,768 as their Valiant cup run came to an end.
