Photo Essay: Port Vale play in a red kit at Huddersfield Town, 2002
Port Vale red kit? in this series we take a look at particularly memorable images from our OVF photo archives – this is a vintage snap of the Valiants playing in a somewhat unusual kit.
Background to the Port Vale red kit
The Valiants arrived at a fixture in October 2002 with their blue away kit which was judged to clash with the home side’s blue and white stripes. As a result, Vale were forced to play in the home side’s away shirts instead. Fans were treated to the bizarre spectacle of a Vale side in red tops with their regular shorts and socks. In addition, the names of the Huddersfield players were obscured with tape (you can see the tape on Micky Cummins‘ back below).
It was an eventful start to the game which was echoed on the pitch as Vale went ahead on five minutes through defender Sam Collins before trailing 2-1 just twelve minutes later. Striker Billy Paynter equalised on the half-hour mark and it ended in a creditable 2-2 draw. Pictured below are Vale players (from left to right) John Durnin, Micky Cummins and Brett Angell.
