Double injury worry for Port Vale ahead of crucial match

Port Vale are monitoring the fitness of Cristian Montano and Mark Cullen ahead of their trip to Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

The Valiants face a tough task to stretch their unbeaten run against their promotion rivals but a positive result would go a long way towards establishing their promotion credentials.

According to reports in the Sentinel, winger or left-back Montano is nursing a back injury while striker Cullen suffered a dead leg during the draw with Scunthorpe United.

Should Montano not make it, manager John Askey is expected to recall available-again loanee Mitch Clark to the left-back spot. Upfront, veteran Tom Pope, who netted a hat-trick against Cheltenham in the FA Cup, could be drafted in if Cullen is not deemed match fit.

Manager John Askey told the newspaper: “Monty is getting a scan today just to make sure there is nothing too serious. But I think his main problem is coming from his back. With Mark, with it being a dead leg, it will feel stiff a bit but hopefully it will be okay on Saturday.”

Despite the injury doubts, Port Vale’s squad depth is looking good. In the last match, Manny Oyeleke, Jake Taylor, Adam Crookes and Richie Bennett all had to be content with a place on the bench.
