We take a leaf through the pages of a programme from Port Vale’s 1952-53 season and a visit to Workington.
About this match
Taking part on the 18th October 1952, this was a Third Division North match. It was also the first competitive match between the two sides. Coming after a 3-0 home win over Chesterfield, Vale managed a 1-1 away draw on the day thanks to a goal from Basil Hayward. The attendance was 6,705. The Valiants won the return game 2-0 at Vale Park thanks to goals from Bennett and Hayward.
The Valiants were managed by Freddie Steele, then a player manager and included the likes of Roy Sproson, Tommy Cheadle, Colin Askey, Stan Turner, Reg Potts, Albert Leake, Basil Hayward and Ken Griffiths – who would form the famed Iron Curtain side the next season.
