Vale have been criticised for an overly defensive system in recent weeks, often using three central defenders and wingbacks.

However, Vale brought on wingers David Worrall and Cristian Montano for the second-half of the 2-1 loss to Rovers and that helped result in Ben Whitfield’s consolation goal.
Askey told the media: “It’s got to be food for thought when people come on and show what they can do. I was pleased for both of them – and it seemed to help the team as well.
“Before the game I was worried about going with two in the middle through lack of legs really. With Joycey and Oyeleke being injured we’ve only really got Kay and Conlon. On a pitch like we’ve got, not to have the legs in there, you worry. But I felt they did really well when we did go 4-4-2.”
