This photo shows goalkeeper Ray King saving a West Ham attack in the 1956-57 season.

Background

This photo is from the 1956-57 season. We think it’s the September 0-0 draw between the two sides which was played in front of 17,582 supporters.

Goalkeeper Ray King is a bona fide Port Vale legend. He was capped by England B and was an integral part of the famed Iron Curtain defence of 1953-54. Ray made 275 appearances for the club and sadly passed away in 2014.
