Rival boss points out key stat in Port Vale’s victories this season
In his press conference ahead of his side’s game against Port Vale, Lincoln manager Danny Cowley touched on a stat whose significance it is difficult to dispute.
Cowley told the media: “I think they have done very well when they have scored the first goal. I think every game where they scored the first goal they have won.
I think every game where they scored the first goal they have won…
“We know that in all football the first goal is always very important.
“But I think we have showed time and time again that if we conceded first we have got enough resolve and enough resilience to get back into the game.”
The stat can’t be disputed. The Valiants have not recorded a single comeback win but on the flipside they have won EVERY game where they have scored first.
Vale so far this season…
Port Vale 3 – 0 Cambridge U | Scored first and won
Colchester 2 – 0 Port Vale | Conceded and lost
Port Vale 0 – 4 Lincoln | Conceded and lost
Port Vale 1 – 0 Crawley | Scored first and won
Carlisle 2 – 1 Port Vale | Conceded first and lost
Tranmere 1 – 0 Port Vale | Conceded and lost
Port Vale 1 – 2 Newport Co | Conceded first and lost
Forest Green 1 – 1 Port Vale | Conceded first and drew

Port Vale 0 – 2 MK Dons | Conceded and lost

On that evidence, many Vale fans will be hoping that it is the Valiants who take the lead in Saturday’s League One clash.

Meanwhile, Cowley responded to speculation linking him with the vacant Brentford manager’s role by saying he was concentrating solely on the game at Vale Park.
