Port Vale defender’s display gives manager food for thought
Port Vale manager Neil Aspin says he has been pleased with defender Theo Vassell’s progress but the recent signing may need to be patient before being thrown into the deep end.
Vassell made an impressive first start of the season in the 1-0 Checkatrade Trophy win over Burton Albion.
After the game Aspin commented: “My view of Theo is that, when I was at Gateshead as manager, he played half a season or so before I left and he looked a real prospect. He was excellent for me and then, when I left, he didn’t do as well.
“But I had seen enough in those first few months to think he had a lot of good attributes to work with and I still think that.
“So, this is a step up for him and we have had to be patient because you don’t want to be throwing him in at the deep end. But I thought he coped really well and he gives me thought for … is he going to get a chance in the first team?
