The two sides last met in 2014 when Vale came out on top in a five goal thriller. Vale surged into a three goal lead thanks to strikes by Tom Pope (right), Billy Knott and Ben Williamson. However, the visitors rallied in the second-half and scored twice through Ash Taylor and Jason Koumas. Just under 5,500 fans were watching the drama unfold.
Best win
Tranmere 1-5 Port Vale, 1930.
In just the second meeting between the two sides, Vale recorded a fabulous 5-1 away victory. Vale’s goals came from Albert Pynegar (2 pictured right), Sam Jennings (2) and Phil Griffiths. It came in a run of five straight wins at the end of the season as Vale finished as champions of Division 3 (North) that season.
Worst defeat
Tranmere 6-0 Port Vale, 1959.
In contrast the Valiants were hammered 6-0 at the start of the 1959-60 season. Just over 11,000 fans were in attendance to watch.
Notable others
