Accrington 3-2 Vale reaction: fans lament left-back woes and say Lainton should start
Port Vale fans say that Accrington targeted Vale’s left defence and ponder bringing Rob Lainton back between the sticks…
Match summary
Port Vale let a two goal half-time lead slip as their poor run of form continued with a 3-2 defeat to Accrington. The Valiants had given a debut to new signing Luke Hannant from Gateshead and took a two goal lead through Tom Pope’s 15th goal of the season and Michael Tonge. But two from Sean McConville and a controversial finish from Billy Kee gave the home side all three points.
Players and management
“I said before the game that I wouldn’t stand here and make excuses after games, and I won’t do that today. Our defending in the second-half, especially for than ten-minute period wasn’t good enough, and we got punished. We need to do better…”
Vale manager Neil Aspin

“All their goals came down our left hand side, which suggests they had identified that as our weak area. Pugh had probably his poorest game for us. Worrall could have had us out of sight by half-time though – he had a great one on one with the keeper and dallied long enough to allow a defender to dispossess him. He then snatched at a shot at an open goal with the keeper nowhere to be seen and put it wide…”

“I’m not surprised by the defeat today but am very disappointed that we let a two goal lead slip. Win needed next week now. Having had a brilliant December, January is turning out to be grim. One point from twelve is undoing the good work over Christmas. We need to get behind them vocally next Saturday…”

“We lost to a better side who needed a rank handball to beat us. We did show a lot of fight and some very good play too…”

“We have needed a left-back for years now the problem now is we need a goalkeeper who can dominate is area and help the defenders…

“I can’t understand how we can have a team that in so polar opposite. We were great against Colchester, Carlisle, Luton and Coventry. But we’ve been absolutely awful against Forest Green, Yeovil and Accrington (2nd half)…”

“We need a new left-back and a stronger keeper because Boot was coming for balls and not getting anything on his punches. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Lainton come back in…”

“First half we played good they had three goal attempts and they all went in… Danny Pugh has to be questioned over all their goals in my opinion…”

“I was impressed with the new lad Hannant. I’ve been saying it for weeks play Lainton …”

“Hammering Pugh is pointless because he isn’t a left-back…”

“I think Lainton has to come in. He was a poor signing because of his injury record… but he is a good lower league keeper when fit…”

“The disappointing thing is we threw it away by a shocking defensive display and poor game management when we could have gone away with three points and climbing steadily up the league…”
