Aspin admits goalkeeping is a “problem” as he assesses squad

Port Vale manager Neil Aspin says that Rob Lainton’s injury has created a “problem” with the goalkeeping position as he assesses his Port Vale squad.

Aspin has confirmed that first-choice Rob Lainton is set to be out for a while yet and that leaves him with only inexperienced cover.

We have a lot of goalkeepers who haven’t played any games, or many league games. The one who has played the most is out injured so that has been a problem…

Aspin told the media: “As far as I can see he [Lainton] is going to be out for a good while longer. He is the most experienced keeper but I have looked through all the keepers at the club and there are not many of them who have played any football for anyone really…

“We have a lot of goalkeepers who haven’t played any games, or many league games. The one who has played the most is out injured so that has been a problem.”

Vale have used four goalkeepers this season. Since Jak Alnwick’s departure in January Vale have used eight different keepers in goal with none of them able to make the position their own.
