Jak Alnwick: Chris Neal was a massive influence on my career
Port Vale’s current keeper has paid a heartfelt tribute to former Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal.
Neal and Alnwick were teammates at Vale Park last season but after Alnwick became a regular in the side, Neal left in the summer. He will make his first return to the Valiants this weekend playing for Fleetwood.
Alnwick told the official Port Vale website: “He was a massive influence on my career, he made me realise what League One football was all about.
We had great competition. He was a great man, there was no bitterness…”He pushed me to be better and coming from Newcastle, it was totally different for me and we had great competition.
“He was a great man, there was no bitterness, he texted me the day he left and said ‘thanks for pushing each other and it was great competition.’
“It’ll be good to see him Saturday and hopefully he plays well, but not too well.”
