Manager Bruno Ribeiro says that Gezim Shalaj needed time to build up his fitness after missing pre-season.
Shalaj came on a sub against Gillingham but had been missing from Vale’s squad against Peterborough.
Ribeiro told the media: “He’s a very good player. He’s strong on one v one’s and has a good first touch. But he didn’t train before he came here so now this is a pre-season for him.
“That’s why I didn’t take him in the squad last week. He played against Bury and I could see he was very tired after the game and in training. So, I said stop for two weeks and have a pre-season.
“Now he’s starting a little bit and maybe will play a little more in the next one.”
