I certainly think others within the club, including owner Norman Smurthwaite, can learn a lot from Page’s positivity.

The phrase “building a buzz” has often been used when fans talk about encouraging more supporters and Page’s letter works in that regard. When it comes to a large financial and emotional commitment such as a season ticket, you need to get people excited and banish the negative thoughts. Excitement sells.

With his sensible, measured and overwhemingly positive words, in Page, Vale could have a real marketing asset on their hands. Let’s hope that with the backing of fans and the owner, Page can also prove himself to be a real managerial asset too. I felt the signs were very promising last season and with increased support could he maybe take it a step further next season?

Time will tell whether he gets it right, but right now, with season ticket sales crucial he’s got the tone of his letter absolutely correct.

This is the time to talk the club up, not down.
