Page backs Johnson but won’t rule out Kenny deal
Port Vale boss Rob Page has said that Sam Johnson has an “opportunity” to “step up” but he hasn’t ruled out a deal for veteran Paddy Kenny.
Following an injury to first choice Chris Neal, Johnson is widely expected to be in goal for the Crewe game but the 22 year-old has endured a shaky pre-season.
It is an opportunity for now to step up to the plate. In the past he has done it…
However, Page told BBC Radio Stoke that “It is an opportunity for now to step up to the plate. In the past he has done it. I remember the Walsall game where he saved a penalty and scored a penalty. Chris’ injury means someone else has to come into it, and why not Sam?”
Veteran Paddy Kenny is training with the club and some fans have called on Page to take on the keeper on a short-term deal.
Page commented: “At this moment in time I am helping a pal out and he is in and training and working really hard. If there is something to be done at the end of that then we will have a look at it, but at the moment it is just a case that he is in and he is training with us.”
