George Whitcombe player profile
A right-sided defender, Welshman George Whitcombe was signed by Port Vale from Stockport County in 1926. The defender had started his career with Cardiff City failed to make a first-team appearance during a three year spell with the Welsh club.
He made his Port Vale debut in September 1926 and made 21 appearances during his first season with the club. However, he had drifted out of favour by the time of the 1929-30 during which he made a solitary appearance.
He was released by Port Vale in 1930 and joined Notts County with whom he won promotion in 1931 before ending his playing career.
A talented multi sportsman, Whitcombe also represented Wales at baseball making five International appearances including one at the Port Vale Old Recreation Ground stadium. A member of a talented sporting family his brother played rugby and another brother also played baseball.
