Ian Buxton was an experienced forward who joined Port Vale FC in 1969 on a three month contract after leaving Notts County. Buxton had spent eight years with Derby County and had scored 43 goals in 158 appearances for the side. He moved on to Luton Town for an £11,000 fee and spent two years there (where he won promotion in 1968) before his move to Notts County.
He scored on his debut for Port Vale (a 1-0 win over Oldham Athletic) and was a regular during the side’s 1969-70 promotion season. Buxton made eighteen appearances for the Valiants and scored a more than useful six goals.
Buxton missed the last four games of the season due to his parallel cricketing career. Buxton had been a regular player for Derbyshire CC for more than a decade and at the end of the 1969-70 season he decided to retire from football and concentrate on cricket. He later became captain of Derbyshire, a role he held for two years. He eventually retired from first class cricket in 1973 after making 350 first class appearances. His footballing career stretched to 234 games and 65 goals over a eleven year spell.
