Rumours: Chesterfield hope to sign Richards ‘this week’
Reports in the Sheffield Star newspaper claim that Port Vale striker Marc Richards is one of two high-priority targets for the club.
The Star claims that Richards is in talks with the Spireites and that the signing could be announced this week.
Meanwhile, an article on the official Chesterfield website claims that the club “are in talks with two players… although no names are being released.”
The striker was signed from Barnsley in 2007 and has 74 goals from 180 starts (plus 22 sub appearances). He stands in ninth place in the club’s all-time goalscoring charts.
The club claims the signings will show that the side want to make a “serious attempt at promotion.”
The Star has been pushing Richards as a “top target” for some days. Back on May 17th, the newspaper claimed that “Port Vale striker Marc Richards is at the top of Chesterfield’s wanted list.”
However, Vale will be desperate to keep hold of Richards, especially since Anthony Griffith left for Leyton Orient at the weekend.
Richards has been top-scorer for the last four consecutive seasons and there have been reports that the club have offered the forward an improved deal in a bid to keep him at Vale Park next season.
