Really disappointing way to lose yesterday. Not a penalty for me. Initially thought it was a foul on Chizzy but the replay shows otherwise. Let’s be honest though, had it not been for Conor Ripley we would have been 3 down by this point. Centre midfield was always going to be a risk and Dan Gore did not step seamlessly into Devines shoes - this will take some time as others have said. The concerning issue for me was the lack of chances we created. Willo was ineffective because he didn’t get the ball and can’t remember us making their keeper work at all. Shorrock did well when he came on and took the game to Portsmouth, something we had failed to do collectively. Loft proved yet again that he isn’t good enough - when a forwards best attribute is - when he hasn’t got the ball - then you need a different forward.

On reflection it was a very hard working team performance last night. We were much more direct with Alfie controlling from his deep midfield role as he did in the 2nd half against Barnsley. The defence stood firm with no real mistakes. Shorrock was immense with good defending and pacy runs down the left. Lomax looks assured with the ball but was struggling 2nd half with the pace of their wing back. Wilson, Garrity, Chislett and Uche were superb and the focus of all our good play and movement. Chislett has been a revelation lately, playing more central and running at defenders which causes panic stations.
My overriding memory last night was of Uche who held the ball up really well and used his strength to take on defenders. After 30 minutes they had 2 players man marking him yet was still bustling his way through them. The run he made which finished with a thunderbolt of a shot that their keeper just tipped over was worth the entrance money alone. The more direct style plus some good passing made it a very entertaining game to watch. Keep it up boys.
Chizzy is one of the players who benefits most when Wilson is playing, Wilson makes clever runs which give Chizzy that vital half yard of space to get a shot off or make a pass. Credit to the manager for his very brave starting 11. Hope after this he realises that the possession stat doesn’t mean anything. 2 forwards and a more direct approach is what the fans have been wanting for weeks. Also think Alfie has slotted into the Olly role perfectly and his disguised pass to Chizzy leading to the first goal was worth the entrance money.

Not sure what games you’ve been watching but Lowe has been our best centre half by a mile so has to play.

Watched them all mate. Obviously we have different opinions which is fine. Worst CB in the air for me, turned his back which caused the first deflected goal against Middlesbrough, also got turned too easy for their 3rd, backed off and let Boro player have a clear run on goal which he fortunately put over the bar in the first half. Frequently plays others in trouble when passing along the back line. Passes to Ripley more than any other player.

Smith must come back in and play in the centre. Debrah has been ok overall and Yak is getting back to full fitness. I think sticking with these 3 as CBs is the way to go. Move Lowe into a holding CM role until Ojo comes back.
Agree with your back 3 but don’t like Lowe in midfield- so he sits this one out. I think he has been poor recently.

Sorry, Nelly... I'm afraid I must completely disagree with you on Balmer. Although how we see the game/players is all about opinions - and this forum is where we can express them - the only place I want to see Balmer is on the train to London.
Would agree with this - very costly errors against Wigan & Middlesbrough. An absolute disgrace that he was selected instead of our skipper and long serving out and out defender, Nathan Smith against Boro.

There is no doubt in my mind that the second half saved Crosbys job for now
Blackpool will be massive for him as we will be looking for a response but the big one will be Carlisle on Monday, fail to win any of those 2 and i am sure he will have to go
2 wins in 15 gets a lot of managers sacked so he is very lucky right now
Agree - be interesting to see the starting 11 on Friday after that game of 2 halves.

After seeing the game sat and last tues here's my team .
We need more energy especially in wing back roles .
Ripley
Debrah Lowe Icavetti (Jones)
Cass Chislett
Walters Garrity
Grant
Dipepa Wilson
Plenty of the right kind of movement there I'd tactically more chislett to Grants position and move Grant into a deep lying attacking midfielder role .
I'd bring Cass in from the cold as he is mega positive especially attacking with Debrah behind him there's every reason he could score or make goals for other team members
Walters comes in and we move Lowe back to centre half .
No massey Sang or Smith for me generally do not have league 1 pace in right areas .
Outmanoevre them Vale come on
Have you got Grant & Chizzy in the wrong positions?

Fair play I meant to have Massey on the right.
More of a Smith fan than you - would swap Smith for Lowe then agree with your 11.

Very much doubt Wilson is fit enough for much more than 45 minutes. I'd keep him on the bench and bring him on at halftime or around the 60 minute mark. Smith had a poor game and the midfield pairing didn't work on Saturday. Unlike some I didn't think Loft had a bad first 60 minutes. First 3 or 4 outings I thought he was poor. He won a lot of headers and I think Garrity would have picked some of the second balls up as a 10.
Ripley
Debrah Lowe Lacovitti
Garrity Sang Devine Grant
Chisslet Garrity
Loft
I was tempted to go for a Chisslet Walters pairing in central midfield, as Walters Devine is incredibly inexperienced. Missing both Arblaster and Ojo is a big issue in that key area.
That gives the option of using Wilson as a 10, or as striker in the second half.
He may do the work of 2 men but you can’t actually play Garrity in 2 positions.
-
What do people expect? How about playing a midfielder instead of a centre half in the middle (Lowe). Take your pick from Walters Conlon Sang or Garrity - all would have done a better job than Lowe.
How about starting Grant on the left instead of a right footed player. If he can’t do 90 minutes you start him. How about realising what a stinker Massey was having and making a change.
How about admitting Loft is garbage and play Uche ( admittedly not much better)
Hurry back Willo.

I'd like to see Sang in midfield as he's no wing back. Got caught out physically for the Wigan equaliser.
If Ojo out get Sang in midfield.
Sang is another player who has been constantly played out of position like Smith (best central defender at the club) Plant (not a LWB) Massey (much better at RWB than up front) and then finds himself out of the starting 11. I like the idea of him in midfield if Ojo out. Let’s play players in their best positions.
Ripley
Jessie. Smith. Yak (Lowe)
Massey. Sang. Devine. Grant
Chizzzy. Garrity
Uche

Trivia fact - our last League home game against Wigan was in 2016 (it was my son's first game and he picked a cracker). Vale threw away a two goal lead but won 3-2 on the day with a certain Uche Ikpeazu scoring a 89th minute winner...
Deja vu or what. Any similar Middlesbrough experiences?

The issue is having two priorities. It's hard to have a fit and up for it squad for both. This has been PVs Tuesday night problem for as long as I can remember.
But Olly and Alfie have come to PV to learn and progress. Both will play higher and Tuesday's experience is important for them. So make sure they are 100% fit and ready to go on Tuesday. Omit today to protect them.
Don’t agree with this and in my opinion sums up our problems. The manager is always focusing on the future fixtures and not getting the current game won. The most important game is today and we can look at Tuesday after today.
This mentality cost us the game on Tuesday.

Trying to convince myself to be excited for this. Festive season, big game Tuesday, decent away following - all the 'allmaaarks of an absolute classic.
We played really well for 63 minutes on Tuesday - if Blaster and Devine are out then it's a massive blow.
Would go for
Ripley
Lowe Smith Debrah
Sang Ojo Walters Grant
Chislett
Garrity Uche
Would agree with this if Olly & Alfie out but desperately hoping they are fit to play.

Smith has been poor for a while now he needs dropping for me. Make Lowe captain. Not feeling optimistic Wigan are in really good form 2-1 loss for me today. Devine with a consolation
Think that’s a bit unfair on Smudge, he is often played out of position as it seems he is the only one who can play on the left of a back 3 (when Yak not available) He is an out and out stopper who is rarely unavailable through injury. He is best at number 5 in the centre of the 3. Not the best with the ball at his feet but always gives100%.

Must win league match tomorrow. Baring in mind we were in complete control until the 63rd double change on Tuesday, I make one change t the starting 11, as we are informed Conor Grant can’t do a full game - so I will start with him. If Massey is fit he starts based on Tuesday first half.
Ripley
Massey Jessie Lowe Smith Grant
Ojo. Olly
Chizzy. Devine
Garrity
one deflected goal doesn’t get Loft a start in my 11. Sang is cover for both wing backs. NO TAKING OLLY & ALFIE OFF on 60 odd minutes
Let’s focus on winning this game only.

The last time I felt so deflated at the end of the game was …….dare I say it the 4-4 with QPR.
Totally the managers fault last night. We had the game won until the disastrous double substitution after 63 mins. Taking off 2 offensive midfielders & disrupting the back 3 in one go - unreal. The back 3 had looked pretty solid all night then he brings on the Yak & pushes Lowe into midfield, so Olly & Alfie replaced by Walters & Lowe - what a negative move and we got what we deserved.
I have stopped believing Crosby B/S to justify poor substitutions, Massey felt his calf Alfie & Olly had knocks - don’t believe you Andy. Really poor tactical changes which cost us the game.
Agree with other posters that manager has a plan and follows it irrespective of what is happening in the game.

To go into the game with a rigid plan to take Devine & Arblaster off after 60 mins and give Grant no more than 45 irrespective of how the game is panning out (because the sports science team have looked into their crystal ball and said they will break down if they play more than that) beggars belief. To replace them with young lads with next to no football league experience is unbelievably bad in-game management. He is obsessed with wrapping the players up in cotton wool; he's created a culture where every niggle is treated with caution. Just focus on winning the game in hand!!
If Grant can only do 45 minutes then you start with him, then you only need one change at HT and not 2 changes.

Starting 11 for tonight. Aware of the fixture pile up but also the importance of progressing. Would like to give Dipepa a start alongside a minder - ie Uche. He might be the answer to the goals problem, we will never know if he isn’t given a chance. Again expect the game time to be shared.
Ripley
Sang. Jessie Lowe Smith. Grant
Ojo. Olly
Garrity. Dipepa
Uche

The strikers we have recently brought in - Uche and Loft are fixed in type, fixed in level of ability and fixed in their limited level of goalscoring. I can't see where Crosby and Flitcroft were trying to go with them.
If they play together them surely it's going to be more route 1 football. But the rest of the team needs adjusting to do that. Otherwise the arrangement seems to be hour / half an hour. I'm totally dismayed by that.
So instead of solving a goalscoring problem - because we hadn't got strikers - we have swapped it for another problem by signing non prolific strikers who demand to play.
I honestly think Tom Pope would score more than Uche & Loft combined, even now. At least he knows where the goal is and his hold up play is miles better than either of them.
