Port Vale coach Danny Pugh says the form shown by centre-half Shaun Brisley shows the current strength in depth in the Valiants first-team squad.
Brisley had failed to make the starting eleven for the first-half of the season but took his chance in style when Nathan Smith was injured. Such was Brisley’s form that Smith was unable to regain a starting place until he lined up as right-back on Saturday.

Pugh told a media conference: “Bris has done exceptionally well and the gaffer has shown, if you are doing well you will keep your shirt. That lifts the competition, people have to fight for their places and, if you come out of the team, you are not going to just walk straight back into it.
“Smudge came out of the team and had possibly been our best player of the season. But he couldn’t jump straight back in the team. I just think that shows the strength in depth we now have and the competition for places which can only be a positive thing for the club.”
