Port Vale’s relegation to League Two was a bitter pill to swallow for supporters, but many will be optimistic that they can make an immediate return to English football’s third tier. After all, the Valiants bounced back quickly the last time they fell into League Two, earning promotion at the first time of asking.
Preparations are already underway under Jon Brady. The squad is being trimmed down, with several players, such as Andre Gray, Grant Ward, and Tyler Magloire all leaving the club, but new signings with promotion experience will be integral to any aspirations the club has in the upcoming season.
Prior to pre-season, though, bookmakers have released early odds for how they expect the season to play out. Now is as good a time as any to take stock of where Port Vale stand compared to other clubs, and see who is regarded as the favourites for promotion and the title.
Port Vale in contention for promotion
Promotion will be the goal for Brady and club chairlady Carol Shanahan, but life is not expected to be easy for Port Vale in 2026/27. They are currently at 9/4 to earn promotion next season, a price which puts them among the leading pack, but behind the supposed favourites.
Chesterfield, who were unfortunate to miss out on promotion last year after a play-off semi-final defeat against Notts County, are considered overwhelming favourites to go up next season. Their odds outweigh those of Barnet, Rotherham, and Bristol Rovers, all of whom have odds of 2/1 to win promotion.
Port Vale’s odds are marginally longer, but bookmakers still put them among the top six, which would be enough for a play-off spot. Fans who might want to back them for promotion can do so by making the most of UK free bets offered by Goal.com.
Title hopes could be a longshot
As expected, the teams who are considered by bookmakers as stronger contenders for promotion are also seen as the ones to watch in the title-race. However, there’s less to separate the supposed top five in this market, as plenty could happen between August and May 2027.
Chesterfield are still seen as the team to beat, after two play-off appearances in as many years, but are still priced at 9/1 for the title. Then come Rotherham, Barnet and Bristol Rovers at 10/1.
Transfers and retaining key players will no doubt impact Vale’s hopes. Having recently secured the extension of captain Ben Garrity until 2028, the aim will now be acquiring the pieces who can propel them back to League One.
However, competition for top players could be fierce, as the Valiants are already discovering. It could make for an interesting couple of months before the transfer window shuts, with Port Vale’s odds of winning the title and earning promotion shifting on a week-to-week basis.
