A controversial red card handed to George Byers largely ruined the game as a spectacle but the Valiants still managed to claim a point after Saturday’s early kick-off game.
Team news
Manager Darren Moore reverted to his ‘League’ side which played Cardiff City. There was one change to the starting elven as he switched in defender Cam Humphreys in place of Kyle John who dropped to the bench. Ronan Curtis partnered Lorent Tolaj upfront. Jayden Stockley, Ben Waine and Mo Faal were all on the bench. Jaheim Headley remained suspended with Ben Garrity and Ben Amos still injured.
First-half
Captain George Byers was controversially sent-off on fourteen minutes as Vale finished the half a man down.
It was a keenly contested but scrappy opening. There were a few half chances during a fairly uneventful first 14 minutes.
Vale’s first attempt came on four minutes but Tolaj just failed to connect from close range after Clark’s flick-on. There was a further chance for the Swiss striker on six minutes but his thumping volley was blocked by fellow Vale player Curtis. The home side threatened with an eleventh minute free-kick but it was comfortable for Marosi.
The game sprung to life on fourteen minutes when George Byers was controversially sent-off for a full-bloodied tackle. We may be accused of Vale bias here, but it looked exceptionally harsh and not even a foul. Byers’ foot was not high and he won the ball. Nevertheless, it stood and meant Vale were a man down in the first-half of an away League game for the second match in a row.
There was a chance for Burton soon after when Debrah’s loose back-pass let in Burton but Marosi was quick to stub out the danger. Vale then had a chance on 22 minutes when Tolaj found Hall but he drove the ball over.
The home side then started to take advantage of their extra man with Marosi called into action on the half-hour mark when Debrah ducked a header. Moments later McKiernan drove the ball just wide from another opportunity with Marosi beaten.
Vale had been forced onto the defensive after the controversial red but they held out to make it all-square at the break. However, the away fans were still fuming at the officials for what seemed a very harsh decision to dismiss Byers.
Half-time: Burton Albion 0-0 Port Vale
Second-half
Goalkeeper Marko Marosi made two crucial saves as Darren Moore’s Valiant ten men matched the home side in the second-half to take a point back to Burslem.
There was an early chance for Tolaj before football rightly took second stage as, sadly, there was a medical emergency in the away end. After a delay of around ten minutes, play resumed.
Vale were managing to contain their opponents but the man advantage meant that Vale’s opportunities were scarce. As the game hit 65 minutes, Beesley had a good chance for the home side but he headed wide. Four minutes later, the same man put another effort wide as Vale rode their luck at times.
There was then a rare chance for Vale. Mitch Clark delivered the ball on 72 minutes and Curtis was inches away with a header. It was the Irishman’s last action as he was then replaced by Ben Waine.
Burton pressed again and Armer headed over on 77 minutes. Tyrese Shade was next as he was denied by a fine save from Marosi on 80 minutes. As a result, Darren Moore brought on Kyle John and Mo Faal to replace the tiring legs of Tolaj and Gordon on 84 minutes.
Despite eleven minutes of additional time, Vale were still looking strong and matching their opponents. There was a late scare as Funso Ojo made a great challenge in his box to stop one chance. But Vale were also creating chances late on and Debrah went close with a header on 97 minutes. Beesley could have won it in the dying moments but he was denied by Marosi as it finished all-square.
Full-time: Burton Albion 0-0 Port Vale
Analysis
The match
So, let’s get this out of the way. The baffling decision to dismiss Byers completely changed the game. The officiating throughout was dreadful. Vale could still have lost had it been eleven vs eleven but once the dismissal was given, the odd were stacked against them and it became a defensive battle. The battling performance by Darren Moore’s men meant it was a pretty grim viewing experience. Dour it may have been but nevertheless it was a strong defensive display by the Valiants.
The tactics
Darren Moore started with a 3-5-2 formation with Jesse Debrah in the centre and Cam Humphreys on the right. Byers’ dismissal resulted in a hybrid formation which deprived Vale of an attacking edge as they battled with a man less.
The players
Ironically, I felt Byers had done well in the opening quarter of an hour till he was sent off. As for the rest of the Vale team – this was a good all-round display. Ryan Croasdale again showed his energy. Jesse Debrah had a shaky first-half but improved as the game went on. Connor Hall was solid but Ronan Curtis had a fairly quiet game upfront. On the plus side, Cam Humphreys looks a classy addition to the backline, Funso Ojo continued his renaissance with a cool performance and we’ll mention Marko Marosi below…
Star man
An honourable mention to Ryan Croasdale, but it was goalkeeper Marko Marosi’s two saves that were key to Vale earning a point. I’ve said before that you need a few games to judge a player and it looks to me like those so quick to criticise the keeper may just be eating their words today.

I hope that the Vale appeal the red card. Watched it again a few times and at most it would have been a harsh yellow let alone a straight red.
Definitely NOT A RED CARD, we have had this ref before he’s a poser, and needs bringing down a peg or two, Deborah still passing back any time he can, and nearly got caught out, I do now think the goalkeeper is settled in.In the end it was a good point gained from a team that did not give in, even though one or two players could have done better up front, the ref spoiled the game for Vale, with a full team we could of won this game.
You cannot tackle in football nowadays not a red card in my view. I thought that Mitch Clarks two footed lunge over the ball in front of the dug outs at the end was a far worse challenge? Battling performance and deserved the point. Ojo was everywhere again, but I thought Marosi was excellent and lovely to hear the fans singing his name, he is winning me around after a shaky start. Keep the faith we are just not getting the rub of the green. Big game Tuesday night 3 points needed.
I was an early season critic of keeper Marosi, but today he delivered an agile and commendable performance in a battling “against the odds” team effort. Competition for a starting place between Marosi and Gauci should lift performances of both keepers, especially when Amos eventually recovers from long term injury. If Marosi consistently assures in dealing with crosses, then the Vale may indeed have a decent signing. Best of luck to him.
Not a red but still a stupid tackle from an experienced player who we’ll miss massively we all know most of the refs we have are total half wits who if given the chance will make terrible decisions. I’m a Moore fan but I’m baffled with the lack of minutes for Stockley no goals in last 2 league games and he’s nowhere to be seen bizarre for me ! On the plus side good point away with10 men for so long fantastic effort from the lads and the support was incredible loud and proud for the whole game we need to do it every game I think the lads will need us UTV !
Battling point and looked a tight unit with solid performances all round. The manager must come clean with regards to Garrity. Looking forward to Tuesday and 3 points.
