In this series we look back at players who only made a solitary appearance for the Valiants. Youngster Nelson Agho may only have played a few minutes for the club but at least he has the consolation of being in the club’s record books for doing so…
Nelson Agho in numbers…
A fleeting glimpse of a record breaker…
Young striker Nelson Agho only played seven minutes for the club, but in doing so he entered the Port Vale record books for the next four years. Agho was a fifteen year-old youth teamer when he was called upon to make his first-team debut as a sub in a Football League Trophy game against Walsall in 2018. Aged 15 years and 262 days he broke Malcolm McKenzie’s record to become the club’s youngest first-team player. His record was broken four years later by Jack Shorrock.
However, despite that early glimpse of the forward and high praise from coach Mick Ede who described Agho as “quick and he has an eye for goal” the youngster never made another first-team squad. He failed to earn a professional contract when graduating from the youth team and subsequently went on trial with Matlock Town. That was also to end in disappointment as he picked up an injury and failed to earn a contract.
