Port Vale’s youth team pushed Liverpool all the way as they suffered a 1-0 loss in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.
The match was played in front of a bumper crowd of 1,802 and Vale put on an entertaining show although they were unable to come back from a first-half Liverpool goal.
The decisive strike came on 19 minutes when Vale goalkeeper Reuben Perry missed a clearance and Liverpool forward Michael Laffey scored.
The young Valiants, captained by Tommy McDermott were unbowed and James Plant caused the Liverpool backline all sorts of problems.
Vale had chances to equalise with full-back Ben Lomax rattled the crossbar and appeals for a penalty waved away but the young Valiants were unable to find that all-important equaliser.
Nevertheless it was a spirited performance by the young Vale players who can hold their heads high after their cup exit.
