Port Vale manager Darrell Clarke praised his team’s workrate but felt the Valiants needed some extra quality after they drew 1-1 at home to leaders Forest Green Rovers.
The Valiants dominated the first-half but only had only the one goal to show for their efforts. They then conceded a late equaliser when they failed to defend a corner.
I thought in the first-half we were excellent. We needed to get a little bit better quality going in the second half if I am honest. But as for effort and commitment from everybody, I can’t fault it…
Speaking to the media after the game Clarke said: “I thought in the first-half we were excellent. We needed to get a little bit better quality going in the second half if I am honest. But as for effort and commitment from everybody, I can’t fault it.
“For me, we were lacking a bit of quality at times. Effort and endeavour was right up there where it needs to be every game, not just today.
“We have certainly played better football than tonight but the boys deserved the points. We didn’t get them so we dust ourselves down and look forward to Saturday.”
Clarke also felt the Vale Park pitch was an issue adding: “I have to be blatantly honest with you. I said it the other week, the pitch isn’t conducive to playing football. It is a pub pitch. It is a park pitch.
“That is not me having a dig at the groundstaff at all, it is just that the pitch is not suitable for the modern day. We all know that. Everybody knows that and we will address that when we can because I have fantastic support at ownership level. It doesn’t help getting the ball down. You see how lively it is and certainly the conditions in the last two games with the wind out there as well, I wouldn’t say it has been a great game of football to watch.”
