Mammoth defender Bob Hazell on the wing and Ray Walker popping up with a last-gasp goal – this game had virtually everything as the Valiants ended a decades long wait for their first-ever win over Bolton Wanderers…
Background
Vale and Bolton had first locked horns back in 1899 but in the nineteen fixtures the Valiants had yet to win. This game came in October 1988 in a season that Vale would go on to win promotion under John Rudge. Remarkably, Vale would also face Bolton in the FA Cup and win again – as they ended their long wait with two wins in a season. Since that season, Vale have only beaten Bolton on one more occasion with their dire record standing at – three wins, eleven draws and thirty losses.

Highlights
Our OVF YouTube channel also has video highlights of the game but be aware (due to an aged VHS tape the audio and visual quality isn’t great). Watch how giant defender Bob Hazell surges up the right wing to help set up the winner…
