October 21st 2024 marks another notable day in the history of Port Vale FC as we celebrate legendary manager John Rudge.
Here’s more information about the day…
Who is John Rudge
Surely no introduction is needed for Vale fans, but for anyone from elsewhere, John Rudge is a legendary figure at Vale Park. Rudge managed the club for sixteen years providing some of the most entertaining footballing sides seen at the club as well as millions in transfer revenue, three promotions, three trips to Wembley stadium and the Autoglass Trophy. In total, he managed the club for 843 games and on his departure no less a figure than Sir Alex Ferguson said Vale fans should “get on their knees and thank the Lord for John Rudge.” After crossing the Potteries divide for a spell as Director of Football at Stoke City, Rudge has returned to Vale Park where he is currently the club president.
Tell us about the statue
Spearheaded by the Port Vale Supporters Club, a total of £100,000 has been raised for the bronze statue. It will become only the second statue at the stadium in addition to that of club record appearance holder Roy Sproson whose statue is opposite the club entrance. Rudge’s statue will be in front of the Hamil Road stand in the middle of what is currently the fanzone.
So, what’s going on…
Supporters are welcome to gather on the concourse from 2pm and the statue itself will be unveiled at 2.45pm. This day was chosen because it is also Rudge’s 80th birthday.
In addition to the unveiling, there will be a further celebration of John Rudge’s statue during the home game against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, October 26th. John Rudge will be at the statue at 1:15pm to meet supporters and have photographs taken with fans. He will then make his way onto the pitch before kick-off.
A commemorative brochure for the John Rudge Statue will also be available for purchase for £10 on the day of the unveiling and during the match against AFC Wimbledon, allowing fans to take home a piece of this special occasion. All money raised will be used by the Port Vale Supporters Club towards the additional cost of the brick plinth and area surrounding the statue.
